Milwaukee Tax Advisement Includes Reconstructed Home Cost Basis

James L. Hintzke, CPA of New Berlin and Rhinelander was hired by a family for a particularly challenging project:

An elderly mother owned a house which was titled in a Milwaukee Life Estate. She was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease and had to move to assisted living. The children had to sell the house to raise funds to private pay for assisted living expenses, but all house-related records were lost. As a result, the children were facing a substantial capital gains tax. James L. Hintzke, CPA of New Berlin and Rhinelander, was able to recreate the cost basis of the house without receipts by having the children draw a floor plan, from memory, of every addition that went into the house while they were children growing up. Construction replacement costs were obtained in today’s dollars, and then converted back to dollars in the year when the children knew the construction work was performed, using Consumer Price Index (CPI) for those years. Several thousand dollars in taxes per child were saved as a result.
